What is PFFD and FH?

I have been researching Oscar's condition since I first learned of it and I sometimes forget that others are unfamiliar with this rare condition. PFFD means either a short or absent femur bone and FH refers to a short or absent fibula. Each child with PFFD and/or FH presents different and so treatment varies for each child. It not only affects the bone but joints and ligaments too. As far as Oscar's is concerned, his right hip did not form and his right femur is about half the length of his left. We are not sure about his knee or ankle yet but I can tell the do not function as well as his left leg. His fibula is completely missing and his tibia is short and bent. His foot has only four rays. He can move his little leg but it moves a little differently than a typical leg. He will be able crawl with his leg but he will need what is called a "helper leg" to walk. It is similar to a prosthetic but has a place for his foot. He will get this around one-year-old. Right now we are not sure what treatment we will seek. We will be getting three medical opinions and then make the best decision for Oscar and our family.
